I can write in MLA format!
What was once an intimidating acronym that I associated with painfully strict rules and guidelines to my writing, I now feel confident and easy towards after taking this English 1010 class.
In this position paper, the goal was to find an issue or topic and take a position: in support, against, or of two minds. I initially chose to delve into our nation’s litter problem, shining light on our country’s overflowing landfills. I initially wanted to focus on asking the question if littering might actually be beneficial - in the sense that it keeps more garbage diverted from the landfill, but as the logic caught up to me - along with the guilt of justifying littering - I decided to focus more on raising awareness about our nation’s landfill and garbage problem. We began identifying our audience, which in this case was the class, and we then based our papers off of what knowledge base the class was at. Some papers where very technological or used unknown jargon, so they needed to be revised accordingly, it was great practice. We create a useful source-gathering device known as an “annotated bibliography”, which I had never heard of but turned out to be very useful for gaining a strong and well-rounded view on multiple sources on the issue by analyzing not only the content, but also the techniques of persuasion that the writer’s used - which helps greatly to filter facts in the sources. I felt that this paper was one of my better ones in that I was able to avoid the rambling off of stray facts, instead being able to translate them into meaningful information that could hit home for readers and be simple to relate to. During the final draft writing process I feel I was finally able to at last come to a peaceful understanding of my writing style. Papers seems to write me, rather than me writing paper. Much stress has been bestowed as I’ve tried to stick to my original end-all, silver-bullet plan to writing a paper or conducting research - but I have finally come to that realization where I can view writing as a journey, and welcome change of course and direction as it goes. Thank you and I hope you enjoy reading about landfills!
